Burden of Proof
Demanding that doubters disprove a claim instead of supporting it yourself.
- informal
The burden of proof fallacy shifts the obligation to prove a claim onto the people questioning it: rather than backing up an assertion, the claimant insists it stands until someone disproves it. The burden actually rests with whoever makes the positive claim — especially an extraordinary one.
Examples
- “I say a secret group secretly runs the economy. Prove me wrong if you can.”
- “My remedy cures colds overnight, and until you can show that it doesn't, you've no grounds to doubt it.”
Why it works & how to counter
Persuasive because it reframes ordinary skepticism as the thing that needs defending. Counter it by reminding them that the person making a claim has to support it; doubt is the default until they do.
